A winger of great technique, Athirson is considered a worthy successor to other great Flamengo players in the position before him - Paulo Henrique, Junior and Leonardo. Since the age of 15 he has played for the national U-17 and U-20 teams, and has won several titles. By nature, he is attacking player and enjoys being on the offensive. But has Athirson has been used several times as a midfielder, following in the footsteps of predecessors Junior and Leonardo, both wingers who also switched positions. He began his career in Flamengo’s youth divisions. 1998 saw him away on loan to Santos – but only temporarily, as the club from Rio has no plans of trading him any day soon.
