Alex’s debut in the national team came in September 1998 against Yugoslavia. Alex was part of the team that came in second in the 1997 U-20 World Championship in Malaysia. He was called up for the 1999 Copa America squad as a replacement for the injured Juninho. Alex began his career at Coritiba, in 1996, when the team finished runner-up in the Parana state league. He transferred to Palmeiras in 1997 and came in second in the National Championship that year. In 1998, he won the Brazil Cup and Mercosur Cup. In 1999, the club claimed the Libertadores Cup and a runner-up spot in the São Paulo state league.
