Along with Azizi, Mahdavikia, Bagheri and co. put Iran in France 1998 World Cup. Ali has finally settled on an European club with Hertha Berlin. After a very good season with Arminia Bielefeld in which he scored 7 goals, but his team was relegated, and later with Bayern München, where he was mainly used as a substitute and he did well, scoring 6 goals. He became the first Asian player to score in the Champions League when he struck twice against Chelsea for Hertha Berlin in the competition's opening group phase September '99.
