The consummate club-level scorer has yet to secure a regular attacking place at international level despite a stunning strike-rate. He has scored over 100 goals in just over 200 club appearances. He first came to prominence when he won the European Golden Boot in 1993/94 after hitting 34 league goals for Newcastle United FC. He won the league and FA Cup ‘double’ in his first full season with United, and bounced back from breaking both legs to win the league again the following season. Despite hitting 25 goals the following season, he was omitted from England’s 1998 World Cup squad. Lightning quick and with a real predator’s eye for goal, he was a key figure in United’s 1999 treble success, and he has been in even better form this season.
