The flamboyant goalkeeper looks set to soon overtake Joao Silva Pinto as Portugal’s record caps holder. His illustrious international career began back in 1990 when he made his debut in a 1-0 friendly victory against the USA. He is back with FC Porto, with whom he spent eight years prior to moving to FC Barcelona. He established himself as one of the top stoppers in the world at the Camp Nou, but he lost his place in the team after a knee injury in 1997. On his return he fell out of favour with Louis Van Gaal after criticising the Dutch manager’s squad rotation system. He helped Porto win the league title when he returned at the last season – his sixth championship with the club – and has recovered the form that made him a Barça regular.
