The best defensive midfielder in the world, joined Lazio in 1997 after spells with River Plate in Argentina and Spanish side Seville. Won Libertadores Cup with River Plate and silver medal with Argentina at Atlanta 1996 Olympics. Has revived career with Lazio after nearly giving up at Seville, earning place in Argentine 1998 World Cup team. Almeyda's prime quality is his power of endurance in his role as the tireless ball-winner for the Lazio side. His absence from the side with injury last season coincided with the Rome team's dip in form. A crowd favorite in Rome and Buenos Aires. Nicknamed "Pelado" (the bald man).
